Preserving Pullman's Historic and Architectural Heritage Earns CNI and NPCA Preservation Excellence Awards

CHICAGO – Recognizing their outstanding work to further historic preservation in Chicago, the Commission on Chicago Landmarks has awarded Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives (CNI) and the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) the John Baird Award for Stewardship to acknowledge their advocacy work in creating the Pullman National Monument.

“The award honors outstanding individuals and groups that further historic preservation in Chicago,” said Eleanor Gorski, Director of Historic Preservation, Bureau of Zoning and Land Use. “This is the premiere award in a group of awards that celebrate Chicago’s preservation excellence.”

Joining the efforts of Pullman residents and civic groups for the past three years, CNI and NPCA have worked together to secure Pullman’s designation as a national park, citing the area’s history and architecture as well as the potential for tourism and economic development such a designation could generate. Earlier this year, President Barack Obama, using his authority under the Antiquities Act of 1906 designated, a portion of the Pullman community as a national monument.
