Contemplate the view of our nation's capital from the heights of the Washington Monument. Walk the sacred fields of Antietam or Gettysburg to ponder the meaning of our history. Gaze out at Baltimore Harbor from the star-shaped ramparts of Fort McHenry, and imagine lifting that flag in triumph. Take a walk at Shenandoah or Harpers Ferry to reach an unparalleled view, or slip into a kayak for a serene paddle on the Delaware River. All of these experiences, and many more, are available to you in the national parks of Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. NPCA’s Mid-Atlantic staff and volunteers work tirelessly to protect this area’s historic, culturally rich, and naturally spectacular parks.

The Mid-Atlantic team tackles many park-related issues. We contest ill-considered developments near historic battlefields, work to clear the air of pollution that harms parks and people, advocate for clean water and access in the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware River Watersheds, fight for the protection of parks against the impacts of hydraulic fracturing and oil and gas pipelines, and engage people of all backgrounds about the national parks in their backyard.

These field reports provide timely updates and perspectives on issues of interest to our members and supporters in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Partnering with local communities and area organizations, the Mid-Atlantic team also raises awareness of the natural, historical, and tourism-generating amenities of the national parks on the Delaware River. Finally, the team takes on big companies when their plans — such as Dominion Energy’s transmission line in the James River, near historic Jamestown — threaten national parks.

The Mid-Atlantic staff and our allies mark many successes in the region — the establishment of Fort Monroe National Monument and the expansion of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park to name a few. We’ve also protected Gettysburg National Military Park from three casinos proposed nearby, and recently established Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument.

As NPCA looks to the future, the Mid-Atlantic staff is optimistic about the outcomes of our current campaigns, grateful for our many past successes, and excited to continue to grow the community of park advocates.

Chesapeake Bay

The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in North America, stretching 180 miles and offering nearly 12,000 miles of shoreline! It is also home to some of our remarkable national parks, including two water trails — The Captain John Smith Chesapeake and Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trails.
