Donor-Advised Funds

Make a tax-deductible gift to protect the parks you love with a Donor-Advised Fund.

IRA Gifts / Qualified Charitable Distributions / Required Minimum Distributions

If you are age 72 or older and own a traditional IRA, you may be legally required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) each year. Moreover, since your funds have accumulated in a traditional IRA pre-tax, the withdrawal of your RMD each year may be subject to income tax.

Many national parks supporters who do not need these funds choose to donate them to NPCA and invest in the long-term future of their favorite national parks. By making a direct transfer of all or a portion of your RMD, you may be able to avoid the income tax you would otherwise be subject to (so long as you did not contribute to your IRA that year). This is known as a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) and you are allowed to transfer up to $100,000 each year.

In order to quickly and efficiently match your IRA distribution gift to your donor record (and promptly provide you the receipt you will need for your taxes), it is helpful if you proactively inform us a check is coming, the amount of the check, and the financial institution.

Donors age 70½ and older who are still contributing funds to their IRA may not be able to donate their QCD free of taxes. Donors are encouraged to seek financial and tax advice from a qualified professional when making gifts.

For more information, contact West Honeycutt, Director of Planned Giving, at 202.809.2787 or by email at whoneycutt@npca.org.

A gift of stock to NPCA will help support our far-reaching park protection activities and programs, and minimize your tax burden at the same time. To donate securities held by your broker, please instruct the custodian to do the following:

1) Transfer the securities to the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) account at Charles Schwab and Company.

Workplace Giving

Support your national parks by choosing NPCA in your workplace’s charitable giving campaign. NPCA participates in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC # 12069) and in many other payroll deduction campaigns through Earth Share, an alliance of the country’s leading nonprofit environmental and conservation organizations working under one name to safeguard public health and the environment.

Many workplaces offer Earth Share as a choice in their charitable giving campaigns, including American Express, Harvard University, American Airlines, Sears, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hewlett Packard, HBO, Aveda, Dell, Tom’s of Maine, Emory University and more.

If your employer does not have an Earth Share campaign, contact Jim Thomson, NPCA Member Services Coordinator, at 1.800.628.7275 extension 215 or by email at jthomson@npca.org to find out how you can help launch a program in your workplace.

Employer Matching Gifts

Many employers match charitable contributions made by their employees. Check with your personnel or human resources office about your organization’s program. If your employer does not have a matching-gift program, NPCA can help you encourage them to start one. For more information, contact matchinggift@npca.org.
