Bikes on South Shore Train Line One Step Closer to Becoming a Reality

Statement by LeAaron Foley, Midwest Senior Outreach Coordinator, National Parks Conservation Association

“Today, the Board of Directors for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transit District (NICTD) overwhelmingly approved a one-year pilot program starting next spring that can quickly get bikes on trains, from Chicago to Indiana Dunes to South Bend. Currently, the South Shore line is the ONLY commuter rail line in the country that does not allow passengers to bring bikes on their trains. Today’s news, coupled with the recent study commissioned by Northern Indiana Regional Planning Commission, offers great momentum for making bikes on trains a reality.

“A report by NPCA, the Future of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, called attention to the need for allowing bikes on the South Shore line in order to increase trail use and to bring new visitors to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. This decision has been a long time coming and today’s vote by the NICTD board is a welcome change and one that we look forward to seeing through. Getting bikes on the South Shore trains will connect cyclists from Chicago and South Bend to the great trail system at our nearby national park. We look forward to working with NICTD to make this a successful venture.”
