Moose-Wilson Road Corridor Plan will Shape future for sensitive and unique area within park
Statement by Tim Stevens, Northern Rockies Senior Regional Director for the National Parks Conservation Association
“The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) supports the National Park Service’s ongoing efforts to balance conservation with recreation at Grand Teton National Park. The alternatives released todaywill be the foundation for a science-based analysis for future management of the historic Moose-Wilson Road Corridor. While stage coaches on the Moose-Wilson Road have been replaced by cars over the past century, its historic values and unparalleled biological treasures remain intact and require continued protection.
“While the draft alternatives provide an important basis for discussing future management options, they do not include the science and policy-based impacts analysis that the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will provide in the coming months. As such, NPCA will not endorse a particular alternative at this point in the process. We will thoroughly review the draft alternatives and continue to advocate for the protection of the wildlife and wild places that this unique part of Grand Teton National Park is renowned for. NPCA also supports Grand Teton’s continued enhancement of recreational opportunities for the park’s 2.6 million annual visitors.
“Since the park began implementing its comprehensive transportation plan, nearly half of the 42 planned miles of bike and pedestrian pathways have become available to visitors. NPCA continues to support protection of the fundamental values of Grand Teton National Park - its unique wildlife, landscapes and history while providing for appropriate recreational access and opportunities within the park along the Moose-Wilson Road. We support and appreciate the creative leadership of Grand Teton National Park and call on all who care about a healthy future of this special place to thoughtfully and respectfully engage in this planning process.”
