I work at the Pocono Environmental Education Center, a proud park partner for over 40 years and a 501.c.3. Due to the government shutdown we have closed our buildings and trails to our day visitors and we are in our last hours of operation of hosting our overnight school groups.
I love my job teaching school children and the park visitors about the natural world and how to lessen our impacts on it. But this is also my income at stake as I’m facing furlough now that we have to turn our school groups away. I also am concerned about my instructional staff as they have their own bills to pay as well.
This park and PEEC are special places that positively affect the lives of so many young people and instills a lifelong commitment to taking care of our environment. Please think about all of the lives you are impacting with this shutdown. It’s not just the government employees affected. It’s also not-for-profit park partners and school kids too.
