Greetings from Grand Teton National Park

As I read your story “The Voice of Glacier” about ranger Follett working 50 years at Glacier, I thought that you should do a story about Jenny Lake ranger John Carr at GTNP. I think last year was John’s fiftieth summer (one was at Denali as a bear guard). John has worked as a backcountry or climbing ranger at GTNP. He has more bear stories than anyone else, and he caught more poachers than anyone else. He’s no longer a law enforcement ranger (he gave up his gun last year), but he wanted to work one more summer. So this is his last season clearing trails, working the Jenny Lake Ranger Station and patrolling backcountry trails. He will finish it mostly in the north end of the park where he started over fifty years ago. Lots of good stories about John. A book could be written about him and his exploits in the park.

Check him out!

Sincerely,
Dan

Grand Teton National Park

This spectacular destination preserves a dramatic stretch of the Teton Range bordering the Snake River. One of the unusual features of these distinctive mountains is the absence of foothills, meaning that there are no smaller mountains blocking the view. The park also features glacier-carved lakes, a historic district of weathered buildings made by 19th century Mormon homesteaders, and an abundance of wildlife large and small, including nearly 1,000 bison that roam the grassy fields in herds.

State(s): Wyoming

Established: 1929

“I worked as a ranger in the parks (26 years at GRTE) and I believe in the NPS mission.”
