Well, you can’t really say “Greetings From…” You have to say “Greetings After Being There,” because Isle Royale National Park doesn’t dignify internet coverage. And that’s the point of being on Isle Royale.
I could write about this place being unique because it’s 99% wilderness. Or the incongruence of this being one of the most remote national parks in the country, yet the one with the highest rate of repeat visitors.
Or I could write about its uniqueness because this is the site of the world’s longest-running predator-prey study.
Or because it’s not one island, but some 450 islands.
Or that it is the largest island on the largest freshwater lake (by surface area) in the world.
Or that its rocks host black, sage, gray and glowing orange lichens, an indicator that you’re breathing some of the finest air on earth.
But those are just facts.
I fell in love with Isle Royale because by coming to this distant, remote place, my wife, son, daughter and I connected in ways we never could have connected unless we had disconnected from only the slightest traces of our lives back home.
Sincerely,
Isle Royale National Park
This rugged, roadless island is the largest wilderness area in Michigan. See moose, beavers, foxes, snowshoe hares, loons, osprey, bats, and other animals without the interruption of cars and other aspects of modern civilization. Try hiking sections of the popular Greenstone Ridge Trail, the longest and highest ridge on the island and access point for many of the campsites, to experience a cross-section of the park’s untamed habitat.
