You can truly “get away” and commune with nature because this park seems to be off the beaten track and there are sparse crowds. We loved the Lehman Caves — so intimate and beautiful with a great tour from the Park Ranger. We enjoyed hiking above 10,000 ft — actually above 11,000 ft — walking among the Bristlecone pine trees, some of which are thousands of years old. The camp grounds are wonderful! Mt Wheeler is 13,000+ ft high.

The diversity of natural beauty at this park makes it a must-see destination for outdoor lovers — the hardest part is knowing where to start. Climb or take a scenic drive up Wheeler Peak, the park’s iconic 13,000-foot mountain, for spectacular views; wander through groves of 3,000-year-old bristlecone pines; take a ranger-led tour through the marble and limestone halls of Lehman Caves; and hike or backpack among pristine alpine lakes. At night, visitors can enjoy exceptionally dark skies and excellent astronomy programs.

“They are our refuge from the hectic life most of us live... they bring us back to a feeling of serenity and happiness. The parks are helping preserve some almost-extinct animals and plants. The Bristlecone pine trees were being chopped and carried off for their beautiful wood, and the stalactites were being broken off as souvenirs before these areas became National Parks and were protected by Federal law.”
