My visit to Alcatraz island was long anticipated as I’ve been checking off parts of the GGNRA that I’ve already visited during my childhood living in the city and now as a student studying at San Francisco State University. A short ferry ride gives your lungs a breath of fresh, salty sea air and brings you straight to the Rock where you are free to wander the 12 acre island. Initially a military base then converted to the United States Penitentiary, the history of Alcatraz has been known to have many layers including the Indian occupation of what was thought to be sacred Indian land. The history coincides with the freedom of expression exhibit @Large of famed artist Ai Wei Wei which were inspired and strategically installed in specific sites on Alcatraz. Flocks of seagulls on the desolate prison site were tucked away and relaxed in the back corner of where inmates used to engage in recreation time enjoying the island’s sunny weather that day. This island once housed hundreds of dangerous prisoners including some that attempted escape from the island prison, today thousands of visitors are able to enjoy and be informed about this piece of land. I learned that Alcatraz is where prisoners went to stay, for good. Needless to say, I was happy to be able to leave the island as I please now that I’ve finally been on the rock and get back to the mainland. #SFSU
