Greetings from Glacier National Park

I had many epic bear encounters in the summers 1984 and 1985. I attributed my rate of sightings to some sort of bear magnetism, as one of my co-workers was bear free until his second summer on a trip we were on together. We hiked off trail (with a permit) over Iceberg Notch and down onto Ahern Pass. On the decent to Ahern we were caught in a punishing hail storm. We camped late in the day and there were four of us in a two man tent. We awoke to find a pile of fresh bear scat no more than 30 feet from the tent. Hiking out through to The Loop through a replanted fire break we encountered three bears. Cub one crossed the trail in a blur. Cub two followed. Mother stood up on her hind legs to view us above the reforested pines (Christmas tree sized). We saw diggings and started making plenty of noise so as not to surprise.

Sincerely,
Karl
