This isn’t just about Bryce Canyon—how it utterly swept me off my feet, brought both me and my husband to tears, for such magnificent beauty and grace that we saw there.
I want to tell you what the National Parks do for me, on a regular basis and in a general way. I live in Los Angeles, which is the only city in the world that is divided by a mountain range. I value the variety and splendor of limitless natural sightings in those mountains. More than anything, those mountains, which house some of the most beautiful National Parks in our country, lure me to them all the time. They are where I find my peace, my balance, my joy, my humility, my self. Without our National Parks, where will the people find their sacred spot, and in many cases, their sacred self? Our country’s magnificent variety of nature, found throughout all of our National Parks in this splendidly beautiful country of ours, has been provided for us by the Grace of God. What a blessing they are for us. For me, they are my sanctuary. Listen to the words in our treasured song: “America the Beautiful”.

This popular park is most famous for its colorful hoodoos, and there are more of these artfully eroded spires here than anywhere else on Earth. The area is not actually a canyon, however, but a series of amphitheaters which feature remarkable rock formations and extensive forests dominated with conifers, including ancient bristlecone pines. Together with Zion and Grand Canyon National Parks, Bryce Canyon is part of a geologic wonder known as the Grand Staircase, an immense area of rock with layered sedimentary formations ranging from 600 million to 2,000 million years old.
