Greetings from Cape Cod National Seashore

“A man may stand there and put all America behind him.” Henry David Thoreau My parents and I began traveling to North Truro, MA and camping on Cape Cod before and immediately following the sea shore’s protection by a National Seashore designation. It was an amazing place for a girl “ bred among the mountains” to behold… an ocean in its full, beautiful glory spread out in all directions…to enjoy, to explore, to admire. I loved those summer two week adventures with sand between my toes, the smell of salt and seaweed lingering in my hair, my body warmed and browned by the sun and my muscles worked by the power of waves and the stretch of the sand. It was glorious to get up every morning, eat a breakfast from the grace of a Coleman stove and a caring mother… and trek to a perfect spot on an endless stretch of fine sand beach. Wasn’t every spot perfect? Here I learned to take refuge and strength from the beauty and power of the Earth. A lesson I continue to use now six decades later —after exploring the beauties and wonders of our great country stored within so many of our national parks over the years. The parks were always part of my journey, provided exceptional, remarkable experiences, and unsurpassed beauty — I shall never forget.

Sincerely,
Susan

Famous for its windswept beaches and spectacular views, Cape Cod National Seashore offers a quintessentially New England experience, from Nauset Lighthouse to the seaside cottages that nestle among the dunes. The park’s 43,000 acres make up most of the curving peninsula between Chatham and Provincetown, featuring barrier islands, pine and oak forests, wild cranberry bogs, kettle ponds, tidal flats, and historic structures from the area's long maritime history.

“I treasure our American shared "ownership" of our National Parks and my private memories of those pieces of our country set aside for us all to protect and enjoy. My parents gave me this insightful "gift" so many years ago by starting me down a path of exploring our National Parks together. As I have done over the years, I will continue to pass on their "gift" to others along the way. What an honor for each individual to embrace our shared Earth in our National Parks' majestic places. Yes, truly an honor.”
