Established in the mid-1700s, Ste. Genevieve was the first settlement on the west bank of the Mississippi River and is the only surviving French Colonial village in the U.S.
The city of Ste. Geneviève was established by French Canadian emigrants in search of farmland and new opportunities. These settlers influenced the region with their unique style of architecture, adapted from building practices in Normandy, France. Very few examples of this architecture are visible today.
Ste. Geneviève is one of the oldest National Historic Landmark districts in the country.
