Park Andersonville National Historic Site Located in southwest Georgia, this 515-acre historic site is a tribute to the prisoner of war experience. Etched on memorials throughout the park is the phrase, "Death Before Dishonor," symbolizing the American resolve to uphold the value of freedom and liberty in the face of adversity. The site consists of Andersonville Prison, the National Prisoner of War Museum and the national cemetery. The museum opened at Andersonville in 1998 and is dedicated to all brave men and women of the United States who have suffered captivity.

Park Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site In 1954, the Supreme Court unanimously declared: “Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.” With this landmark decision, the United States put an end to racially segregated schools on the grounds that they violated the 14th Amendment, which guarantees equal protection to all Americans. The Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site commemorates this decision and the larger struggle for racial equality through educational exhibits and events on the grounds of Monroe Elementary, a formerly all-black school in Topeka, Kansas. A museum incorporates videos and interactive exhibits on the history of racial segregation in America and the destructive legacy of Jim Crow. A walk through the site’s “Hall of Courage” recreates the experience of the first African Americans attending newly integrated schools. Visitors are encouraged to absorb the difficult history and also reflect on it in a space provided for art and meditation.

Park Antietam National Battlefield On September 17, 1862, Union and Confederate soldiers battled for 12 savage hours on the banks of Antietam Creek. When the fighting was over, 23,000 people were killed, wounded or missing, making it the single bloodiest day of the Civil War. The Union Army’s performance led President Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, formally alerting the Confederacy of his intention to free enslaved Americans in those states. Today, Antietam National Battlefield is one of the best-preserved Civil War sites in the country where visitors continue to honor the legacy of the soldiers who fought there.
