Park Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site In 1954, the Supreme Court unanimously declared: “Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.” With this landmark decision, the United States put an end to racially segregated schools on the grounds that they violated the 14th Amendment, which guarantees equal protection to all Americans. The Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site commemorates this decision and the larger struggle for racial equality through educational exhibits and events on the grounds of Monroe Elementary, a formerly all-black school in Topeka, Kansas. A museum incorporates videos and interactive exhibits on the history of racial segregation in America and the destructive legacy of Jim Crow. A walk through the site’s “Hall of Courage” recreates the experience of the first African Americans attending newly integrated schools. Visitors are encouraged to absorb the difficult history and also reflect on it in a space provided for art and meditation.

Park Booker T. Washington National Monument This monument commemorates the tobacco farm where one of America's most prominent African-American leaders of the late 19th and early 20th centuries was born into slavery in 1856. Washington spent his boyhood at the 207-acre estate until the Union victory in the Civil War freed his family. After the Civil War, Washington became the founder and first principal of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial School. Later as an adviser, author and orator, he spoke to the new disenfranchisement of former slaves who suffered under discriminatory Jim Crow laws enacted in the post-Reconstruction period, and he helped to fight for educational and economic advancement in the African-American community.

Park Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve Just outside of downtown Jacksonville, this preserve protects 46,000 acres of wetlands, hardwood forests, and coastal dunes along with historic sites and relics from 6,000 years of human habitation. The site is named for and helps preserve the history of the 35 Native American chiefdoms that lived in the region and spoke the Timucua language. The site also contains the remains of a plantation with slave cabins, helping researchers better understand the culture and daily lives of the enslaved people who toiled there. The park also includes a historic beach founded during the Jim Crow era by Florida’s first African-American millionaire, a 1920s-era golf course, and a memorial to France's failed New World colony.
